Writing Prompts: Gossip

The Gossip Game

Part 1: Talking from Boredom … or to Build Yourself Up?

Gossip is not simply talking about other people, but rather talking about other people with a purpose: to alleviate boredom … or to feel better about ourselves.

God wants better than that for us.  Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (ESV).

Think back over your conversations during the last day or two. Journal about your motivations. Why did you talk about others?

Part 2: One Sure Way to Avoid Getting Angry

When we pay attention to what is being said about another person, we can see how destructive and unkind it can be. Gossip – talking about others with a self-centered motivation – causes only damage. Proverbs 25:23 tells us, “As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!” (NLT)

Gauge what happens when those around you engage in gossip. How does it make you feel or think?

Part 3: Not-So-Harmless Words

A word here or there … a bit of information about another person … a sly comment: at the time, gossip seems so inconsequential and harmless.

Scripture tells another story: “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends” (Proverbs 16:28, NLT). Talking about other people because you’re bored or because you want to feel better yourself creates division and strife.

Think about relationships that have been hurt by gossip. What could you or others have done instead of gossiping?

Part 4: Can You Avoid Getting In the Game?

With so many people casually talking about others because they are bored or because they want to feel better about themselves, is it possible to not get caught up in gossip?

There must be. Proverbs 26:20 tells us, “Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down” (NIV).
