Writing Prompts: Mothers and Motherhood

Mothers & Motherhood, Part 1:  Honoring Moms – Why Everbody Does Itfamily

Early Christians celebrated motherhood during Lent with a special remembrance of Mary, the mother of Christ. In England, the tribute expanded to include all mothers, called Mothering Sunday. In the U.S., it was President Woodrow Wilson who signed a Joint Resolution in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

God, too, encourages us to pay special respect to our mothers: “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God will give you” (Exodus 20:12).

Part 2: The Most Fulfilling Job You’ll Ever Have

Jesus’ mother Mary gives us a glimpse of both the joys and sorrows of motherhood: satisfaction as he providedwedding guests with much-needed wine (John 2:1-11) … panic when she realized her son was missing (Luke 2:41-52) … sorrow as she watched her son succumb to a horrible death (John 19:25-27).

Motherhood is not always easy, but it can be immensely fulfilling as you lean on God for strength and direction.
